King of the Aquarium Wild caught discus can be challenging to keep, due to their specialized water chemistry and dietary needs, however, most discus sold today are captive bred and are much easier to keep. That said, they are not for beginners for a variety of reasons.

You can fit up to six or more discus in a 40g tank if you are will to do the dirty work; change a great deal of water on a daily basis, or feed the fish less.

A general rule you can follow is one discus per 10 gallons. Since these fish are tall, do not keep them in shallow tanks.

A frequent water change is one of the most important factors for discus growth. It has been proven through an experiment that where one tank's water is changed multiple times daily, and in another tank, the water is changed only once daily.
